Work

Oil on panel

As if in a ghostly dream, a grieving Anthony is surrounded by all kinds of monsters and strange creatures. A stout lady bares her breast and winks at the crucifix. Behind it, a "fallen angel" holds up a golden cup (a monstrance?) in which a monster does its part. This painting is almost blasphemous. The colors are monochrome and the work is very fleeting and loosely painted. The subject was very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries because, although religious, it gave the painter an alibi to depict all kinds of ghostly fantasies. In this case, the painter also took the opportunity to let loose stylistically.
