In this picture van Herp depicted an interior with a peasant family frying a fish. We can see them gathered in a simple room with a stone floor. Light is falling in through a window with a wooden shutter folded up. The family has gathered around a small fireplace which is burning on coal. A young woman is frying the fish, another woman beside her is holding the rest.
On the right side of the scene we can see a bearded man holding a little girl on his lap. He is feeding the girl a porridge-like goop with a spoon. He has taken this from a clay bowl that is standing on a coarse woven cradle beside him.
In the background on the left of the scene we can see a man who is secretly drinking from a large mug. On the floor in the foreground we can also see a cat who is enjoying the remnants of a fish. Next to him is another jug and a bowl filled with other fish.
This painting shows an idyllic, detailed and high-quality presentation in harmonious colours, emphasizing the family with its lighting.
