We'd like to thank dr. Jan de Maere for his attribution.
Diana and her companions have just taken a bath, in a dense forest landscape under a blue sky and the setting sun. Actaeon surprises her, by appearing in a reddish cloak accompanied by his dogs. Diana then transforms him into a stag, the small growing horns on his head already indicate this change.
The light flesh tones of the nymphs and Diana are particularly emphasized against the otherwise dark background. The motif of Diana with her companions near the water can be found in many other artists such as Gillis Coignet the Elder and also by Adriaen van Stalbemt (1580)1662°
