Joseph van Bredael was a member of one of the most accomplished painting dynasties in 17th–18th century Flanders. Trained within a family steeped in the tradition of landscape and genre painting, his lineage includes his grandfather Peeter van Bredael and his uncles Jan Frans and Jan Peeter van Bredael the Elder all respected artists.

By the end of his career, van Bredael had relocated to France, where he was appointed court painter to Louis d’Orléans, Duke of Orléans, and became a member of the Royal Academy. His reputation was built on his delicate handling, compositional clarity, and atmospheric effects, making him one of the most refined successors to the Brueghel school.
