We’d like to thank dr. Didier Martens for his advice.
Coffermans is best known for his religious paintings, which were produced during a period of strong artistic continuity with the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Rather than striving for radical innovation, Coffermans positioned himself within a well-established visual tradition that remained in high demand, particularly for devotional use.
Coffermans frequently drew inspiration from earlier masters such as Rogier van der Weyden, Bernard van Orley, Jheronimus Bosch, Ambrosius Benson and Adriaen Isenbrant, as well as from German printmakers including Albrecht Dürer and Martin Schongauer. His practice should not be understood as mere imitation. Instead, he adapted these revered models to the stylistic expectations and devotional sensibilities of his own time, simplifying compositions, clarifying narratives and adjusting figures and settings to suit sixteenth-century tastes.
