Work

Sculpted in lime-wood, original polychrome layers

The back of the Virgin's head is separately hollowed out (so-called Spechtloch/woodpecker's hole).

This technical detail seems to be typical for some Swabian workshops and also for one Franconian workshop (Bamberg).

Taking in account the Kuhmaulschuhe or Duckbill shoes and the economically appearing drapery (parallel folds on her right arm and on the neckerchief), we date this sculpture circa 1520.

Possibly made in Augsburg.

We like to thank Michael Rief for his experts opinion.
